Black vine weevil

Black vine weevil

Otiorhynchus sulcatus

The black vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sulcatus), also known as the taxus weevil or cyclamen grub, is matte black with fused wing covers; unable to fly its dispersal ability is limited. The black vine weevil attacks over 100 kinds of ornamental plants and berry crops, including strawberries. The adult black vine weevil feeds at night on leaves while the larvae develop below the soil surface, feeding on roots, rhizomes and plant stems causing serious to irreversible damage. During the day, the adult black vine weevil hides in mulch, garden debris or in soil cracks.

Damage

The larvae (C-shaped grubs) cause the greatest level of damage to plants. Symptoms include wilted leaves, stunted growth and plant death. Small notches in the edges of the leaves are one of the signs of adult black vine weevil feeding.

There are specific natural enemies for the black vine weevil.
