Pepper weevil

Pepper weevil

Anthonomus eugenii

The pepper weevil (Anthonomus eugenii) feeds and lays eggs on sweet peppers (Capsicum annum), chilli peppers (Capsicum frutescens) and other solanum species such as eggplant and tomato.

Damage

Adult pepper weevils will feed on the aerial parts of the host plant, creating small circular or oval feeding punctures which in tun allow the ingress of fungus. The larvae of the pepper weevil develop and feed inside flower buds and fruits, consuming both the flesh and the seeds. Some telltale signs are yellowing followed by dub and fruit drop as well as fruit distortion and premature ripening.

There are specific natural enemies for different weevils.
