Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus var. lanatus) is a flowering plant species of the Cucurbitaceae family, with more than 1,000 varieties.
Pollination
Watermelon is a cross-pollinated species with monoecious (with male and female flowers produced on each plant). The male flowers predominate at the beginning of the season; the female flowers, which develop later, have inferior ovaries. Pollination of indoor (tunnels and greenhouses) grown watermelons can be accomplished by hand pollinating but bumblebees are extremely effective pollinators, saving time and money.
Pests and diseases
